New research indicates that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you become starving," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
