Colombian Leader Warns 'I Will Return to Arms Again' should United States Intervenes Militarily.

The US President and Colombia's president have turned up the volume of their exchange, further raising tensions bilaterally following US forces struck Venezuela with the aim of deposing President Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He has narcotics facilities and processing labs and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.

Rising Tensions coupled with Allegations

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, the US president hinted at comparable use of force towards the South American nation, stating the nation is “very sick too” and governed by a sick man who likes making cocaine and trafficking it to the United States."

Although Colombia remains the world’s largest cocaine-producing country, there is no evidence implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way tied to the business.

A Frayed Partnership

The nation's illicit drug economy is predominantly run by guerrilla factions like the Clan del Golfo, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and renegade units of the demobilized Farc, a large contingent of whom disbanded after a historic peace agreement.

Colombia's Defiant Rebuttal

Upon being questioned if a military operation similar to Venezuela was a possibility against his country, Trump responded: "It sounds good to me personally."

President Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who demobilised in the 1990s, firmly denied the accusations. "I am not an illegitimate leader and certainly not a narco," he declared.

"The US president speaks uninformed. Stop slandering me," he expressed in a message.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will become a multitude of fighters across the countryside. And should they arrest me, whom a significant portion of the population loves and respects, they will release the powerful force of the populace," he admonished.

From Fighter to President

He passed a period in his early life belonging in the left-wing M-19 guerrilla group but is not believed that he never participated in combat. Upon leaving the group, he participated in creating the nation's constitution in 1991 subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He held the office of mayor of Bogotá prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I swore to abstain from using a gun ... but in defense of my country I shall resume arms again," he said.

Reinforced Protection and Broad Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez reported that the president’s protection team was strengthened.

A segment of Colombia’s conservative opposition have sided with Trump's stance, yet figures from all sides of the ideological divide have denounced the threats of American military action against their nation.

Political and Economic Strains

Washington revoked the president's entry visa subsequent to he encouraged US troops to disobey any illegal orders. Later, in October, authorities imposed financial sanctions on Petro, his wife and various close collaborators.

At the same time while America bolstered its military presence in the Caribbean and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces executed strikes on boats off the Pacific coast off the Colombian coast.
